1785 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Scott of Amwell

Nor must I here forget thy modest strain,
O gentle master of fair Amwell's plain!
Tho' not to thee the splendid powers belong,
Good sense and virtue dignify thy song:
Thy mournful muse shall soothe the pensive mind,
And ev'ry page please or instruct mankind.
