1833 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Samuel Bishop

Hartley Coleridge, in "William Mason" Northern Worthies (1833; 1852) 2:291n.

There is a pretty lively copy of verses by Samuel Bishop, master of Merchant Taylors' School, on presenting his wife with a knife after fourteen years' of marriage, beginning,—

A knife, my dear, cuts love they say;
Mere modish love perhaps it may.

These are pleasant reading. But let all married poets beware of deluging the public with treacle.
