1764 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

J. C-rr (James Carr?), "To Mr. Churchill's Muse" St. James's Chronicle (24 April 1764).

To Helicon no more admit,
O Muse, if thou art wise, this Wit.
With Face of Sanctity, the Sot
Will send thy sacred Spring to Pot;
At one short Sitting he can swill
What fifty mod'rate Bards would fill;
He'll drain thee dry, alack! alack;
And then he'll laugh behind thy Back.
