1786 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Cowper

Hannah More to her sister, February 1786; Memoirs of Hannah More (1835) 1:235.

I am enchanted with this poet; his images so natural and so much his own! Such an original and philosophic thinker! such genuine Christianity! and such a divine simplicity! but very rambling, and the order not very lucid. He seems to put down every thought as it arises, and never to retrench or alter any thing.
