1788 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Beilby Porteus

Anonymous, in "Beilby Porteus" New London Magazine 4 (January 1788) 23.

His moderation and good nature render him universally admired by a very respectable and extensive acquaintance. His peculiar modesty when called upon to preach charity sermons justly merits a record in this place. He always desires being excused from the pomp and ceremonies usually observed to bishops on those occasions; and generally finds his way into the church by some bye-door, to avoid unnecessary parade; and never omits putting something handsome into the plate for the charity. He has on every occasion shewn himself a friend to liberty of conscience and catholic principles.
