1794 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Thomas Percy

Thomas James Mathias, in Pursuits of Literature (1794) 15.

Is it for me to creep, or soar, or doze,
On wings of modish song, of feet of modish prose?
To pen with garreteers obscure and shabby,
Inscriptive nonsense in a fancied abbey,
Or some Warkworthian hermit song endite,
Such ditties rare as ancient girls could write?
