1780 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Robert Lloyd

Thomas Davies, in Life of Garrick (1780) 1:319.

This gentleman's interest Mr. Garrick endeavoured ardently to promote, by procuring a large subscription to a volume of his poems. Mr. Lloyd brought on the stage of Drury-lane, in 1761, a pastoral called Arcadia, an elegant panegyric on their Majesties nuptials. Though the manager exerted all his powers to promote its success, it was but short-lived. Lloyd destroyed himself by intemperance, and died in the Fleet-prison, 1764.
