In Britain, during a certain period when I was a great reader of poetry, there was a sort of abeyance in a delightful art. Hayley, after Gray and Mason had ceased writing poetry, was thought to be the first poet of England, and his mawkish Triumphs of Temper praised as a first-rate production.
