1829 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Hayley

John Clare to Henry Francis Cary, 3 January 1829; R. W. King, The Translator of Dante (1925) 227.

Hayley's Poems which you so kindly presented me with I have read, and I do not like him near so well as [Erasmus] Darwin, but perhaps the subjects are the cause — the measure in which he has translated some passages of Dante is very curious, but it don't strike me as one well suited for the Epic.
