1829 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Hayley

Robert Southey to Samuel Egerton Brydges, 14 November 1829; Brydges, Autobiography (1834) 2:164-65.

My paper upon Hayley in the Quarterly (No. 62) was so offensive to Mr. Gifford, that, after it was printed, he withheld it from two successive numbers: and if he had not then ceased to be editor, and had persisted in witholding it, I might probably have withdrawn from the Review. There neither was, nor could be, any reason for this, but that he could not bear to see Hayley spoken of with decent respect.
