1793 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Whetstone

Anonymous, "Knowledge, Learning, and Taste during the Reign of Elisabeth" in Universal Magazine 90 (September 1793) 170.

George Whetstone wrote a comedy, intitled, Promos and Cassandra, which no otherwise deserves to be noticed, than as it is said that Shakspeare founded upon it his Measure for Measure. Whetstone was a various writer in prose; but his poetical compositions were of too quaint and pedantic a nature to deserve the attention of posterity.
