1856 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Richard Tickell

Samuel Rogers, in Table Talk (1856) 63-64.

Sheridan, Tickell, and the rest of their set delighted in all sorts of practical jokes. For instance, while they were staying with Mr. and Mrs. Crewe (at Crewe Hall), Mrs. Sheridan and Mrs. Crewe would be driving out in the carriage, Sheridan and Tickell riding on before them: suddenly, the ladies would see Sheridan stretched upon the ground, apparently in the agonies of death, and Tickell standing over him in theatrical attitudes of despair.
