1803 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Roscoe

Thomas James Mathias, in "Imitation of an Italian Ode" 1803; Henry Boyd, The Woodman's Tale (1805) 257.

Sequester'd from the vulgar throng
Of poets, while Valclusa's spring
And Dirce's fount inspire my song,
Let me not mount on flagging wing,
While Roscoe! thee I call,
Whose sapient hand withdrew the pall
From many a monument of ages past,
And bade their splendours all revive, with time itself to last.
