1807 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Gifford

Thomas Campbell, 6 July 1807; in William Beattie, Life and Letters of Thomas Campbell (1849) 2:110.

Positively Ryde has a Boeotian atmosphere; or else the simplicity of my fellow boarders has smitten me. I sometimes call on the satirical Gifford, who is here; who "mentalizes" me for a few moments, but the impression lasts too short. The ennui, the want of conversation, is intolerable.
