1784 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Anne Hughes

Edmund Cartwright, Review of Hughes, Poems; The Monthly Review 71 (November 1784) 386.

Though Mrs. Hughes may not possibly rank, as a poetess, with the Barbaulds, the Mores, or the Sewards of the age, she yet writes very decently lady-like verses. Her poems are Eclogues, Pastoral Ballads, inscriptions, and a Legendary Tale.
