1783 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Samuel Hayes

Edmund Cartwright, Review of Hayes, Creation, a Poem; The Monthly Review 72 (June 1783) 467.

Presuming that the duties of his office, as Usher of Westminster School, prevent Mr. Hayes from cultivating English poetry, we conclude that the present attempt (for we cannot concur even with the very learned Vice chancellor in calling it a poem) is the production of one of his scholars. We would advise the young gentleman, whoever he may be, to let this attempt be his last, as we are confident he never will succeed.
