James Hogg

Bernard Barton, 1817; Samuel Smiles, in A Publisher and his Friends: Memoir of John Murray (1891) 1:474.

Bernard Barton wrote to Mr. Murray, and said that he had "heard that James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, was author of the Tales of my Landlord [by Sir Walter Scott], and that he had had intimations from himself to that effect," by no means an improbable story considering Hogg's vanity.
