1821 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Lord Byron

William Lisle Bowles to John Murray, 6 April,1821; Garland Greever, A Wiltshire Parson and his Friends (1926) 125-26.

Lord Byron is the most liberal, manly, and kind-hearted opponent I have ever met, and I feel even gratitude towards him, as much as I respect him, for the manly vindication, without asperity or unkindness, of Pope's moral character. It has weigh'd with me more than any thing I have ever read, particularly with regard to Pope's connection with Martha Blount.
