1819 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Lionel Thomas Berguer

Thomas Moore, 25 August 1819; Journal of Thomas Moore, ed. Wilfred S. Dowden (1983) 1:207-08.

Dined at the George — while at dinner received a note written by a Gentleman in the room, a Mr. [Lionel Berguer], saying that finding out who I was he could not, as a friend of Walter Scott and admirer of poetry in general, resist the opportunity of introducing himself and begging I would take some wine with him — joined him after I had done dinner and drank a bottle of claret with him — a parson and a poet himself — but not very orthodox, I suspect, in either capacity.
