The two valuable preferments which Spence obtained, the Prebend of Durham, and the Professorship of Modern History at Oxford, were owing to the interest which Pope, among some of his powerful friends, exerted in his favour. And it was upon Pope's recommendation that he travelled with Lord Middlesex, which was the foundation of his future good fortune.
