1810 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir Charles Abraham Elton

Anonymous, in Review of Elton, Tales of Romance; Monthly Mirror NS 8 (July 1810) 52.

Mr. Elton is a scholar and a writer of considerable taste; but as a poet, we should, on a scale of of twenty, let him stand at about nine and fifteen sixteenths. It is not every class of readers that will feel an interest sufficient to enjoyment, in the subjects of these old romances, and they who fondly love the theme, will prefer them in their former garb, unadorned with the treimmings of Mr. Elton's fancy.
