1882 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Robert Greene

Epes Sargent, in Harper's Cyclopaedia of British and American Poetry (1882) 19.

If only for one stanza that he wrote [A Death-Bed Lament], Robert Greene (1590-1591), playwright, and poet, deserves a mention. He was born in Norfolk, got a degree at Cambridge in 1578, travelled in Italy and Spain, and wasted his patrimony in dissipation. Returning hom, he betook himself to literature as a means of livelihood. He died in great poverty and friendlessness.
