1814 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Thomas James Mathias

John Taylor Esq., "To Thomas James Mathias, Esq. on his Life of Gray" 1814; Poems on Various Subjects (1827) 1:300.

Though thou "Virgilium vide!" canst not say,
Breathing thy homage at the shrine of GRAY,
MATHIAS I have seen, his worth I know,
His classic elegance, his moral glow,
And all must own that none more aptly blend
The poet, scholar, gentleman, and friend.
