1828 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. John Moultrie

Anonymous, in Review of Friendship's Offering for 1828; The Monthly Review S3 (January 1828) 72.

Who, may we ask, Mr. [Charles] Knight, is the Rev. J. Moultrie? His name alone is sufficient to deter any reasonable man or woman from perusing his verses. We found so many of them, however, in the work before us, that we were compelled to read a few, and certainly a more unmusical collection of lines it has been seldom our misfortune to sleep over. They are as bad as a dose of opium.
