1773 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Woty

Percival Stockdale, "Lines inscribed to Capt. Thompson, and the Rev. Mr. W. Woty" Westminster Magazine 1 (September 1773) 562.

WOTY, of Comus long the favourite guest,
With noblest arts, and gentlest manners blest;
Will ne'er to Drones his social converse deign,
Nor wake for them his gay Horatian strain;
Will ne'er on them his wit in vain bestow,
His happy wit which never made a foe.

Soul still spontaneous loves congenial soul,
True as the faithful needle to the pole;
But human drones ne'er won an ardent heart,
By all the frigid politician's art.
To THOMSON'S favour you must ne'er pretend,
The dauntless sailor, and the generous friend:
Whose ruling object is his country's cause,
Fierce with her arms, and jealous of her laws;
Whose active worth retards Britannia's doom,
The single Type of uncorrupted Rome.
His height none reaches in this dwarfish age,
Look for his character in Plutarch's page!
