1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. George Crabbe

Anonymous, "On the Rev. Mr. Crabbe, Author of a Satire on Newspapers" The Diary, or Woodfall's Register (11 January 1791).

Search thro' each orchard, rifle every tree,
Where shall we find another CRAB like thee?
Yet why a Crab? why should so foul a name
As that of Crabbe be handed down to fame?
Thou can'st not be a Crab to write so well;
Oh no! thou rather art a Nonpariel.
