1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Daniel

Anonymous, "Daniel's Sonnets" The Diary, or Woodfall's Register (4 November 1791).

SIR,

The following [three] Sonnets are extracted from a collection published near two hundred years ago; they were originally written by Samuel Daniel, and as I do not recollect to have seen them inserted in any modern publication, their ease, unaffected simplicity and beauty, induced me to copy them, in the hope that you might think them worthy a place in your valuable Paper. If they should meet with your approbation, you may probably be troubled with a few others, from, Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

AN OLD CORRESPONDENT.
