1732 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Matthew Concanen

Anonymous, "On the new Attorney General" Grub-Street Journal (7 September 1732).

Come, Dunciad Authors, come to dinner all,
C—'s made Attorney General.
Think not this honour a mere Act of Grace;
His noble talents justly claim'd the place:
For all Attorney Generals, 'till of late,
Were ever fam'd for legal Billingsgate;
And he that us'd the turn-coat Lord of Dawley
In the same stile that COKE of old did RAWLEY,
Goes to restore, in Climes from Britain far,
The ancient elocution of the Bar.
