1779 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. John Hacket

Samuel Johnson, in "Life of Ambrose Philips" in Lives of the English Poets (1779-81); ed. Hill (1905) 3:314.

He [Ambrose Philips] was employed in promoting the principles of his party by epitomising Hacket's Life of Archbishop Williams. The original book is written with such depravity of genius, such mixture of the fop and pedant, as has not often appeared. The "Epitome" is free enough from affectation, but has little spirit or vigour.
