1744 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Lewis Theobald

Anonymous, Obituary Notice in Westminster Journal (22 September 1744).

Mr. Theobald, a Gentleman well known for his several Poetical Productions already printed, and for many more promis'd and subscrib'd for. He was a long Time distinguish'd by Mr. Pope as the Hero of his Dunciad, but expung'd a little before the Death of that Gentleman, whom he has soon pursued to the Grave.

POPE chang'd his Hero ere he went,
To lash egregious Folly:
Then TIBBALD dy'd, with Fame content,
And left unrivall'd COLLEY.
