1786 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Hayley

Anonymous, "Sonnet Extempore. Written on the Banks of the Arun. Occasion'd by reading Mr. Hayley's late Poem" General Advertiser (28 September 1786).

While Arun hears her Poet sing,
And modulate each tuneful String,
To "virtuous Howard's" Praise,
Her Echoes through the winding Vale,
Repeat the sympathetick Tale,
The panegyrick Lays.
And while admiring Albion views,
His Portrait drawn by Hayley's Muse,
And marks the gen'rous Plan:
Benevolence elates her Heart,
And glows in every vital Part,
To hail the godlike Man.
Her free-born Sons shall eternize his Name,
And join an Hayley's with an Howard's Fame.
