1778 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Hannah Cowley

Admiratur, "An Extempore, on reading Mrs. Cowley's Monody" General Advertiser and Morning Intelligencer (12 November 1778).

Yes, Chatterton, I envy thee;
Would Fate had prov'd a jade to me!
Kind death approach! nor grim, nor drear
Thy form or house can now appear!
Thy daggers bring — thy bowl, or dart,
Drench my veins, or chill my heart;
So Cowley writes my Elegy,
To be so mourn'd, who'd grudge to die!
