1779 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Hannah Cowley

Alexis, "Impromptu, addressed to Mrs. Cowley" St. James's Chronicle (22 May 1779).

Lov'd Daughter of the Comic Muse!
What sportful Subject e'er you chuse,
With native Powers you please;
Your Pen, Prometheus-like, inspires
Each varied form with living Fires,
With Strength and sprightly Ease.

Your Dupes will twins immortal shine,
In Wit's bright Zodiack entwine,
While Taste or Humour's known.
Your Justice Bella shall engage
The Plaudits of a future Age,
And charm the Embryo Town.
