1758 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Christopher Smart

Anonymous, "An Epigram" Lloyd's Evening Post (9 January 1758) 31.

Kit wrote, and Kit publish'd, and then to a Peer
He got the dear poem presented.
"The wretch, quoth the bard, read my piece; but, what's queer,
He ne'er asked to see me who sent it.
Sure he takes me for NOBODY. — Ay! that's the whole:
I find what his Lordship must mean;
On reading your book, Kit, he thinks you ALL SOUL,
And of consequence — not to be seen.
