1728 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Jonathan Swift

Anonymous, "To the Minor Poets" London Evening Post (15 June 1728).

To snarl at P—pe's superior Lines,
Ye Moderns, tho' provok'd, forbear:
Where Homer, Sun Meridian, shines,
Your lesser Fires must disappear.
Ye Lilleputians, be not seen
'Gainst S—t, Gigantick to conspire;
Lest he, as once he serv'd your Queen,
Shou'd piss out your Poetick Fire.
