1743 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Matthew Prior

Anonymous, "Upon the Laureat's aukward Imitation of Mr. Prior's Epistle to Boileau upon the Battle of Hockstedt" London Evening Post (26 November 1743).

When C-bb-r mimicks Prior's Muse,
Whom wou'd it not provoke?
Must both our Tongues the Language use,
And Neck receive the Yoke?

To smooth rough Words with artful Touch,
Tho' Prior knew, God wot;
C-ll-y of English makes High Dutch,
Of High Dutch, Hotentot.
