1794 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Godwin

Joseph Ritson to Sir Harris Nicolas, 1794; Letters of Joseph Ritson (1833) 2:57-58.

Did you ask (for I don't exactly know what I have done with your letter) whether Godwins book [Political Justice] was about to appear in 8vo? I can only tell you that he is preparing for such an edition, but I do not think it is likely to be published these twelve months. I suppose he will give me timely notice, as I myself have the 4to edition — though it cost me, by the by, no more than 18s. — You have read his novel [Caleb Williams], I presume; he has got it sufficiently puffed in the Critical Review, but, between ourselves, it is a very indifferent, or rather despicable performance, — at all events unworthy of the author of Political justice: I have no patience with it.
