1799 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Jackson Pratt

Mary Robinson, in "On Reading Mr. Pratt's Gleaner" Morning Post and Gazetteer (25 July 1799).

Thrice welcome, lib'ral Gleaner! To whose lore
Enraptur'd Genius yields her varying store:
To whose rich harvest NATURE smiling pays
The brightest tribute — of her brightest days!
Where classic fruits, by Taste spontaneous strew'd,
Delight the rational, and feast the good:
Where Poesy her treasur'd sheaf unbinds,
While round the GLEANER'S brow her wreath she winds;
Whle Reason bids the torch of Fancy burn,
And Pity's tear bedews Affliction's urn....
