1764 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

Anonymous, "Monitory Simile. To Mr. Churchill" London Chronicle (23 October 1764) 387.

Have you not in a pudding seen
A mighty space the plumbs between?
Just so, methinks, your works appear,
A lonely plumb stuck here and there;
Vast, sure, must be that Author's gain,
Who passes for plumb-pudding plain;
Then prithee, Churchill, the next slice,
Give us more plumbs, or 'bate the price.
