1771 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Colman

Philo-Shakespear, "On Garrick and Colman" London Evening Post (16 November 1771).

Garrick and Colman
Scarce make a whole-man,
United in Person and Wit;
In Verse as in Prose,
In Pageants and Shews
The Public by both have been bit!

Then let us engage
To drive from the Stage,
These Puppet-shew Wits of the Day;
The Means must be rough
To banish such Stuff,
And bring Authors and Actors in Play!
