1771 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Lyttelton

Anonymous, "Mount Edgcumbe" Middlesex Journal (24 August 1771).

Art thou, my dear GARRICK, not leagu'd with Apollo,
And do not the Muses their LYTTLETON follow?
Then where is the wonder? His presence and thine
Must make ev'ry place you reside in divine.
Hence forth for Mount Edgcumbe, Parnassus we'll quit,
But Hagley shall still be the Temple of Wit.
