1775 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Anonymous, "Jenkinson and Burke" Middlesex Journal (9 December 1775).

Burke lifts the olive branch, peace is his plea;
While Jenk—son crys out, blood! blood! for me!
This would let slip war's fell and rav'nous hounds,
That would bind up and heal a nation's wounds:
One hopes to glut Scotch avarice, pride, and hate,
One wishes to preserve a sinking state.
