1793 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Anonymous, "A Dangerous Bore" Morning Chronicle (11 January 1793).

The dagger that the Thane with terror fill'd,
Was but a shadow to the moonstruck mind;
But Burke, — in daggers more than Shakespeare skill'd,
Throws fancied shadows to the wind.
The murderous weapon waves in air before us,
And if he can't convince us, — swears he'll bore us!
