1779 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Mary Robinson

W., "On seeing Mrs. Robinson in the character of Jacintha" Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser (12 May 1779).

Were Chesterfield living, with rapture he'd see
The Graces he courted all center'd in thee.
Such charming simplicity, ease without art,
With force irresistable pierces the heart.
From a face so divine, one soft smile to obtain,
Contented I'd suffer whole ages of pain.
Yet each moment such matchless perfection we view,
Is a torture to us, though a pleasure to you.
