1787 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Colman

Nimrod, "To George Colman, Senior, on his writing the THING, in the St. James Chronicle, with an intention of abusing the WORLD" The World (11 August 1787).

O, Thou small piece of great ill-nature,
Who enviest every living creature;
Who oft the critic war would wage
Against the actors of the Stage:
And thus, to little malice prone,
Strove to degrade poor HENDERSON.
At last — the World has ta'en the sting
From all thy Sarcasm could bring;
And publish'd by The WORLD — in spite,
We once can bear The THING you write.
