1778 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Hannah More

Numps, "To the Editor" Morning Post and Daily Advertiser (16 January 1778).

What a Bore,
Is this Miss MORE!
All her fame
Hangs by her name;
Puffs and puns,
And jingling hums,
Flatt'ries high,
And praises sly,
Ne'er had been,
Nor day-light seen,
Did she write,
As sure were right:
One O more
The R before.
Were it Fen,
There's not a pen,
From such stuff,
Cou'd twist a puff;
Bog or marsh,
To sounds so harsh,
Not a rhyme
Good lack! wou'd chime!
Of lucky hit,
Or name so fit,
Poetaster,
Was never master.
Happy name!
To which Dame Fame,
Like a leach
To horse's breech,
Sticks so fast,
That shou'd it last,
SHERRI Dick,
With envy sick,
Thalia's plume
Will ne'er resume,
But away,
Like frost in May,
Sink before
The mighty MORE!
