1780 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Mary Robinson

C., "To Mrs. Robinson" Morning Post and Daily Advertiser (29 August 1780).

As from a cloud upon an April day,
The sun, with double radiance, darts her ray;
As the rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear,
With tenfold lustre to our eyes appear.
So when Detraction hurls the envious dart,
With pois'nous fury, at thy gen'rous heart,
Thy Merit, and thy Beauty, shine more bright,
More purely glancing, on the wond'ring sight!
Cocoa-Tree.
