1785 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Woty

M. Z., "To Mr. W. W—y on his incomparable Verses to the Memory of Dr. Johnson" Morning Post and Daily Advertiser (27 January 1785).

Indeed, Mr. W—y you're all in the wrong,
Your fancy's too playful — too various your song;
Talk of Virgins loose-rob'd attending the sage,
Alive you had put the old man in a rage.
Be silent henceforth, nor with sense be at strife,
Let him lie with his betters — lie you with your wife.
