1799 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Richard Cumberland

Catastrophe, "Epigram on Mr. Cumberland's Nine new Pieces" Morning Post and Gazetteer (30 July 1799).

Sure CUMBERLAND'S spirit can never grow flat,
Since his MUSE has to boast NINE lives, like a CAT.
Like a cat too, so watchful, his genius ne'er fails,
For he lashes the age like a cat of nine tails.
