1722 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Leonard Welsted

Matthew Concanen, in "A Letter to a Critick, in Defence of the Modern Poets" 1722; Universal Journal No. 21 (29 April 1724).

Fain would I rove thro' Steele's instructive Page,
Admire the Bard, and venerate the Sage;
Or trace our Verse, to full Perfection brought
In Welsted's Numbers, and by Welsted's Thought;
But dare not venture, lest my want of Skill
Should praise him better than my Strength of Will:
Their Lines draw Lustre from the Shades in mine,
And painting ill, obstruct my great Design.
